Louis Legendre is a Canadian-born oceanographer renowned for his contributions to biological oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, and numerical ecology. He earned his PhD in oceanography from Dalhousie University in 1971. Legendre served as a professor at Université Laval from 1973 to 2000 before joining France's CNRS, where he directed the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory from 2001 to 2010. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University and Université Laval.

Throughout his career, Legendre has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored the influential book Numerical Ecology with his brother, Pierre Legendre. His accolades include the Prix Marie-Victorin, the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award, the International Ecology Institute Prize, and election to the Royal Society of Canada and Academia Europaea.
