Benoit Pirenne is a senior ocean science and technology expert affiliated with Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), a world-leading initiative based at the University of Victoria. He serves as the Director of User Engagement at ONC, where he plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the vast quantities of data collected from ocean observatories are accessible and useful to researchers, industry, government, and the public.
Pirenne has a background in computer science and has been instrumental in the design and operation of ONC’s advanced data management systems. His work focuses on promoting open ocean data sharing, supporting real-time ocean monitoring infrastructure, and fostering collaborations across scientific disciplines and international borders.
He is also a frequent speaker and advocate for ocean literacy, digital ocean innovation, and the use of big data and AI in marine research.
