Professor of polar sciences and animal ecophysiology
Prof. Dr. Hans-Otto Pörtner is a professor of polar sciences and animal ecophysiology at Bremen University and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany. He has established theory and evidence on the effects of global warming, ocean acidification, and hypoxia on (aquatic) animals and ecosystems. Professor Pörtner was elected Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II (WGII) on Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability for the Sixth IPCC Assessment Report in 2015. He co-led all three special reports, with a focus on the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate and the contribution of Working Group II to the Sixth IPCC Assessment Report, and he contributed to the Synthesis Report. Professor Pörtner also co-initiated and co-headed the first ever collaboration between IPCC and IPBES, and he is also a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU).
